This is my scientific study on the connection between the Golden Ratio and beauty.
Observation
Everyone has a different perception of beauty. People have suggested different theories about math and attractiveness. Are our varying concepts of beauty based on one thing?
Question
How does Phi affect beauty?
Background Information
Hypothesis
I believe that the closer an object or person approximates Phi (1.6180339887...), the more aesthetically pleasing it will be because of the presence of Phi in human proportions and nature and art.
Variables
Controlled -- Type of Images
Manipulated -- Presence of Phi
Responding -- Perception of Beauty
Manipulated -- Presence of Phi
Responding -- Perception of Beauty
Materials
{2} Faces that closely approximate Phi (1 male and 1 female)
{2} Faces that are distant from Phi {3} Rectangles (1 Golden Rectangle, 1 square, and 1 elongated rectangle) {2} Paintings (1 that includes Phi, and 1 that doesn't) {2} sets of flower images (1 w/ Fibonacci petal numbers, and 1 w/o) {60} Students Notebook Pencil |
Procedure
{1} Gather materials and set up.
{2} Select student at random. {3} Display image approx. to Phi (manipulated variable), and image(s) not approx. to Phi. {4} Direct them to study and to decide which is more structurally pleasant and attractive to them. {5} Record decision (responding variable). {6} Repeat steps 3-5 with each set of images (controlled variable). {7} Repeat steps 2-6 with each student. {8} Organize and analyze data. |
